Studying abroad was something that I’ve always heard about but never actually imagined that I would do it. But I can confidently say that being in Costa Rica with the most amazing people was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I didn’t know anyone when I went on this trip however, I came back home with six new friends for life. This allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and experience a new culture and language. The purpose of a study abroad it to learn while in another country and I feel like for Spanish specifically it is the best thing you can do. It surrounds you with the language and culture 24/7 and this helps tremendously with understanding.

Studying abroad and travelling to Costa Rica profoundly changed my life. Traveling out of the country for the first time with a group of strangers was very scary. It was a big change; however, the community was so welcoming and quickly became a second home. The people and support groups around me really made it a wonderful time. It not only grew my knowledge and appreciation for language and culture but changed my entire outlook on life. It was truly an experience like none other and no aspect of me regrets going.

The culture, food, and scenery are all beyond beautiful. There so much to see in a month so I learned to admire it as much as I could. Being in a whole different country gives such a grand perspective on everything.

I would have never gone to Costa Rica had it not been for Professor Vana believing in me. Not only am I a first-generation college student, but no one in my family has traveled outside of the United States. Though not shown on my face, I was very frightened. I am glad I took the leap of faith because I had an amazing time in Costa Rica. The culture, the food, and my overall environment was wonderful. I loved being with my host family and spending time with them. I made it my mission to spend as much time with them as I could as well as making outside connections at parks, the basketball court and restaurants. I visited beautiful churches, museums, and even walked through a rainforest. I learned so much about the Spanish language and even cool words that they use primarily in Costa Rica. I made so many connections that will follow me for the rest of my life. I am forever grateful and I hope that many students take advantage of the opportunity.
